OUR SERVICES MEET THE TEAMOn 2 February 1972 our late founder partner Dr Sarel Spies joined the late Dr Louis Botha in Private Practice and Dr Spies & Partners saw the light. The original practice was stationed in Duiwelskloof (now Modjadjiskloof) and had a close bond with the old Duiwelskloof Hospital. In 2003 the Tzaneen Medi Clinic opened its doors and a second surgery rooms (now the main rooms) was opened next to the Medi Clinic in Douglas Street.
Since then the two surgery rooms in Duiwelskloof also merged into one big modern surgery room in the main street. Currently we run two spacious fully equipped surgery rooms servicing patients from Mooketsi, Sekgopa, Kgapane, Duiwelskloof, Haenertsburg, Tzaneen, Letsitele, Nkowakowa, Gravelotte and surrounding areas. In Dec 2024 Dr Sarel Spies, our mentor and beloved colleague died after a short sick bed. He was still actively working at the age of 82 until Sept the same year. To honour him, his legacy and the sound medical practice he taught us we decided to keep the name of the practice and decided that it will be known as SpiesMed Family Practice in future. We strive to keep up the good work he did and lived for and to keep serving our local community in the best, honest and sincere manner possible!
Currently SpiesMed has five fulltime doctors- three male and two female . All bringing their own specialities and interests to the practice, but still functioning as a team making the health of every patient walking through their doors a priority. As a mother of two and with a Masters Degree in Family Medicine Dr Shani’s focus is on promoting healthy families. As part of SpiesMed Family Practice since 2007 she has a special interest in Diabetes and Cardio-vascular health and also assists female patients with gynaecological concerns. Recently treating Obesity Medically became a passion and she loves helping patients embark on a healthy weight loss journey. Dr Shani is a keen cyclist and loves adventure traveling and spending time with her family and friends!

Dr. Andre’ Botes qualified at the University of Stellenbosch in 1991. He developed his passion for family medicine in South Africa’s fruit basin Tzaneen, Limpopo Province, where he started solo practice in the town in 2000. With his roots in the rural medicine of the Hoedspruit area, he developed a special interest in Hiv in the early 2007’s, and after doing the Dip Hiv man. , he was part of numerous NGO based HIV roll out programs in the early days of the HIV pandemic, when there was still no anti-retroviral medication available in SA. This passion for HIV care is still part of his current practice. Alongside that, he differentiated his practice skills in specialized Diabetes Care, and was Part of the CDE network of Diabetes practices in Tzaneen for 20 years. In 2017 he joined Dr. Spies and partners, and continued the passion for medicine with a group of doctors who were also passionate about patient care and the science of medicine. He is a family man and has three children and loves the outdoors.

Dr Botha started his private practice journey 40 years ago working with our founder Dr Sarel Spies. He is therefore now seen as the remaining father of the practice. As a father of three and proud grandfather of two teenage girls he is definitely in touch with all generations and can deliver a comprehensive and inclusive family medicine service. He also has a MPrax. Med (Family Medicine degree) from UP. His passion has always been treating patients with depression / mood disorders, children with ADHD and Respiratory Illnesses. He loves traveling and taking photos while doing that. He boasts that he has visited 33 countries with many more to see!

Dr de Villiers obtained his medical degree in 1986 at Pretoria University. After a brief working experience in the UK he developed a passion for conscious sedation and specialises in this field. Family medicine has always been near his heart and he loves to serve his community in this way and help those in need. He is a keen sailor and is involved in missionary work in Mozambique. You will always find him busy doing something like all the handy man work around the practice. Never a dull moment when he is around!

As the newest member of the Spiesmed team Dr Anika is excited to get to know and serve the wonderful people of Limpopo.Dr Anika Graduated in 2021 and has a passion for holistic management which include Preventative management and screening, Mental health, aesthetic medicine and family medicine. Although she is young she is passionate and full of energy. She takes time to listen and understand your complaints and believes in treating the person and not just the disease. Dr Anika considers herself a life long learner and strives to stay on top of the latest medical developments. She has completed courses in BTX and filler treatments, advanced cardiac life support, paediatric life support, mental health, advanced trauma life support and advanced medical life support. You can also find her in the emergency center of our local private hospital as she has great passion for emergency medicine.

At SpiesMed we are privileged to have fully equipped procedure rooms to do multiple minor procedures like lacerations, excisions, biopsies, cauterization of lesions, cryotherapy and abscess drainage to name but few.
We also have qualified nurses working in our rooms collecting blood, doing injections and rendering specialised wound care including wound vac care. When visiting us, you rarely have to go elsewhere for extra services.

Dr. Jaun de Villiers has brought this skill from the U.K, when he worked there, and has done the diploma in sedation and analgesia. He does conscious sedation for dentistry in our area, and also in our medical practice.
Conscious sedation is not anaesthesia, which by law has to happen in theatre in a hospital setting. Dr. Juan performs his sedation at the dentist practice, or at the doctor’s office, where the procedure is being performed.
The service saves many patients a lot of money in theatre costs, and especially children who are very anxious when having dentistry procedures done.
With our roots in the HIV pandemic , we live in a country with nearly 7 million people living with HIV, our practice gives acute and chronic care to many patients living with the disease.
We follow national guidelines with regards to monitoring, and have contracts with most of the major medical aids to deliver care to patients. We are also a ‘pick up point’ for patients receiving chronic medication.

At Spiesmed Family Practice, our doctors have all done emergency care courses like ACLS, PALS, ITLS, and some have done ATLS. Our doctors do shifts in ER at Medi-Clinic Tzaneen, whom we have a close relationship with.
